Visiting a village down the Sepik, you will find women preparing Sak, Sak, which is pulp dug out of a sago palm tree. After pounding it to a substance like flour, they add water to liquefy it. The batter is used to make porridge, pudding, pancakes and is also suitable for breads. Another staple of the diet is fish which they sometimes add with Sak, sak Pork is a popular meat and is often cooked in a traditional firepit called a mumu. A type of sweet potato called a kaukau is a staple vegetable as are a wide variety of greens and tropical fruits.
